We are examining sites where man and “nature” collide I put nature in quotations because I mean nature to be any space: geological, geographical, biological, or constructed where humans have interacted, trapped, fenced, opened up, reconstructed, or left alone the natural world to its own devices. The fake ferns in a dead mall are one way man has chosen to interact with nature. The site of a strip mine. Your front lawn or lack thereof. The Los Angeles River is a primary example, a channelized ditch in most places unlike London or Paris where the whole city turns towards the river, the whole of Los Angeles turns away from its river. As well as a beautiful forest or Walden Pond. Look toward your readings for inspiration from Ehrlich’s solitude and William T. Vollman's essay on nearby Bombay Beach.

Go to the Center for Land Use Interpretation's (clui.org) website and be prepared to discuss who and what is CLUI. After you've become acquainted with the organization, go to the the Land Use Database ( http://ludb.clui.org/ ) and pick out one site of interests and be prepared to talk about why this site is interesting and how humans interact with that particular site. Print out the web page to turn in as evidence of your investigation.
